This version differs slightly to the typical Chinese game because only one chow is allowed per hand and the game Chinese has fewer “special hands”. Some will find the British game more interesting than the Chinese game but its game is more elegant and traditional.

The Important Rules to Mahjong

Mahjong is a game which is played with tiles. However, there are some rules to follow for better experience in the game.

1. Basic Equipment

A Mahjong tile set contains 144 tiles that are typically 30 x 20 x 15mm in size. They are traditionally made of bone or ivory, but most modern sets are made of plastic. The tiles are made up of:

The “Suits” are made up of circles, characters, and bamboo. The “minor” tiles are the suit tiles numbered 2 through 8. The “major” tiles are the remaining suit tiles, 1 and 9. The “honour” tiles are the Wind and Dragon tiles.

Two dice are required in addition to the tiles. On traditional Chinese dice, the 1 and 4 are red, while the rest of the numbers are black.

2. The Setting in The Game

Each player takes one of the four wind tiles, which are shuffled and placed face-down. The players take their seats in the following order: N – W – S – E.

You’ll notice that these aren’t your typical compass positions. Since this player starts, east is the prevailing wind and the key position. The player scores double and pays double for the round.

3. Build The Wall

Flowers and Seasons aren’t typically used in Chinese games, and these rules assume that they aren’t. In a ritual known as “The twittering of the sparrows,” South and North thoroughly shuffle all of the tiles face down.

After that, each player takes 34 tiles and arranges them in a 2-tile-high, 17-tile-long wall. The long sides of the tiles should be facing down.

Each player should have a wall in front of them as they run from left to right. The four walls are then pushed together to form a square that represents China’s Great Wall.

It’s crucial to make sure there are no gaps between the walls and that they meet at the corners to keep any lurking dragons or evil spirits out.

4. Break The Wall

East rolls the dice to see who will break the wall. It counts the players in order of the number thrown, starting with East and working anti-clockwise.

The player who sits at the end of the count throws the dice again, adds the total of both throws, and then counts from right to left along his wall.

Moreover, the player breaks the wall when the count reaches zero, which is done by removing the pair of tiles at that point and placing the top tile on top of the previous tile and the lower tile two positions anti-clockwise. “Loose tiles” refers to these two tiles.
